Unlucky Massa makes big gain at German GP
26 July 2010
Felipe Massa may have been denied victory in a controversial German Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver was still the biggest gainer in the Castrol Rankings top 100.
The Brazilian led more laps than anyone else at Hockenheim and, even after allowing his team-mate Fernando Alonso to pass him, was able to finish second.
His result meant that he climbed 21 places in the Castrol Rankings and now lies 41st. He is sandwiched between Brickyard 400 winner Jamie McMurray and former World Rally Champion Petter Solberg.
Victory at the German Grand Prix boosted Alonso's score, but did not move him up from his ninth spot in the Castrol Rankings.
In fact, none of the top 10 places were altered, meaning that Red Bull F1 driver Sebastian Vettel retained his number one spot for an 18th consecutive week, albeit by an increased margin from McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.
Renault driver Robert Kubica (14) swapped places with Mercedes's Nico Rosberg (16) as both finished in the lower reaches of the top 10. Force India's Adrian Sutil (26), despite suffering tyre dramas at Hockenheim, also gained two places.
Seven-times World Champion Michael Schumacher maintained his rise from outside the top 1000 in March with another F1 points finish. A 15-place gain brought him up to 78th.
Lotus drivers Heikki Kovalainen (49) and Jarno Trulli (65) fared badly as both retired and dropped nine and six places respectively.
It was a former F1 winner though who was the top 100's biggest faller this week as Giancarlo Fisichella dropped 13 spots to 96th.
The Castrol Rankings is based on drivers' measurable performance over the last 12 months, including everything from their grid position to fastest laps. For further information on how the Castrol Rankings scores are calculated, click here.
